Creating Melon-Type Balls In Photoshop


Note: This tutorial has been carried out in Adobe Photoshop CS5. Some functions may be very different in older versions of Photoshop.
Final Result:
1)  Create a new layer with Width 600, Height 340.
2)  Press CTRL+I. This fills the Background with Black.
3)  Open a new layer.
4)  Fill (SHIFT+F5) this layer with any shade of green.
5)  Open Layer Style for the current layer and make the following changes:

6)  Press CTRL+R. This opens the ruler.
7)  Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool.
8)  In the Tool Options Bar, click on Add to Selection.
9)  Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool, create the selection shown in the image below.Fill (SHIFT+F5) this selection with White.
Make sure the width of each rectangle is exactly 2cm and so is the gap between each consecutive rectangle. Also, the rectangles should start from the top of the document and finish on the bottom. Deselect the selection (CTRL+D).
10)  Open Layer Style for the current layer and make the following changes:
11)  In the Layers Panel, make the following changes to the current layer:
Your image should look like this by now:
12)   Go to 3D > New Shape From Layer > Sphere.
This creates the Sphere.
13)  Next, Go to Window > 3D.
14)  In the 3D window, open Filter By: Materials.
15)  Under Opacity, select New Texture.
The settings for this texture are the same as that specified in Step 1.
16)  Again, under Opacity, select Open Texture.
17)  Fill this document with 15% Gray. Save the document and then close it so that you return back to the original document.
18)  Make the following changes:
19)  Next, click on Filter By: Lights and make the following changes:
20)  Next, click on Light Rotate Tool.
21)  From Toggle misc 3D extras, select 3D Light.
22)  Change the position of the lights as shown below:
Once you are done with making Melon type ball, in the 3D (Materials) tab, scroll up and select Scene and make the following changes.
This will smoothen the edges of the ball. Once you are satisfied with the result, left-click anywhere on the document to stop the process.
That’s it, babe. Final Result:
Voila.
